Selby District Families Get Share of £50,000 To Get Fit

Families in Selby district could benefit from a share of 50-thousand pounds to help them get active.
The money from Sport England will be used to provide exercise classes and sport sessions. The funding is part of a three-year £2 million project called Make Your Move, which aims to increase opportunities to participate in sport at a local level in innovative and creative ways.
The most recent figures show 18.6% of eleven year olds in the area are obese, with adult obesity worse than the national average.
Stuart Murray, Chief Executive of WLCT, said: “This is the first time we have successfully bid for funding to carry out a project across all three of our contract areas, so we are especially delighted with this award. We are all about getting people active and the MyFamilyFitness programme will give a real boost to our work in the local communities.”
The Sport England National Lottery Funding is being distributed by Sporta, the representative body for leisure and cultural trusts in the UK. Leisure trusts are able to apply for up to £50,000 and in the first round 13 different projects throughout the UK are being supported.
Brian Leonard, Sporta’s CEO, said: “The Make Your Move campaign is about increasing participation in sport at a local level. By funding projects designed by local trusts and created specifically for local people, the Make Your Move campaign can make a real difference to local people. This, in turn, offers true benefits to these trusts’ local communities.”
