Work Begins to Turn York Office Building Into Flats
6:46pm 12th June 2014
York based developer the Skelwith Group has begun work to transform Roman House on Rougier Street into 47 luxury apartments, following the green light from City of York Council earlier this year.
Skelwith bought the 35,000 sq ft building from insurance giant Aviva after it became surplus to the insurance company’s office requirements.
Contractors have started the first phase soft strip-out of the building. 'Soft stripping' is the removal of all non structural elements of a building leaving the shell intact, ready for redevelopment.
Since its acquisition Skelwith has been working with leading Architects Brewster Bye on the redesign. Along with extensive internal remodelling care has also been taken to ensure the building enhances its surroundings with new windows, roof curtilage and a feature entrance.
Featuring a 24 hour concierge service and high end internal and external specification, the building will house some of the best apartments in York.
Inspired by Skelwith’s wealth of experience in developing luxury hotels, each apartment has been designed to reflect a residents every need and requirement, taking inspiration from the modern city centre apartments of London and the contemporary loft living of Manhattan.
Commenting Paul Ellis, Managing Director of Skelwith, said: “We are very excited to start work on Roman House. The building occupies a very prominent location on Rougier Street, and are plans for the building will dramatically improve the local area, delivering an iconic building for York in the process.
“Since we announced our plans the level of interest we’ve seen from buyers has been overwhelming with enquiries from around the country, we have also seen very high levels of interest locally with the majority of sales to date coming from York residents.
“It’s clear that potential buyers are looking for something special, something that is unique and fits into their lifestyle. With its attention to detail, high quality finish and use of technology, Roman House not only meets these expectations, but surpasses them.”
Sales for Roman House are been handled by Ashtons estate agents.
Discussions are ongoing with main contractors and an announcement will be made shortly, with a target completion date of early 2015.
