Concerns Over New Park and Ride Sites In York
8:28am 10th June 2014
There is concernt that people living on Boroughbridge Road are being left out as York's 2 new Park and Ride sites open.
There is only one stop on the new number 59 from the Poppleton Road Park and Ride and the city centre, which is at Holgate Road.
Andrew Bradley, Sustainable Transport Manager at City of York Council, said:
“York’s Park&Ride is one of the best and biggest in the country, making over 4-million passenger trips ever year. Providing free parking and low price 15-minute journeys into York, it’s designed to offer an alternative to the option of driving from out of town in to York city centre and parking centrally, which helps to relieve congestion on York’s streets. All but one of York’s existing Park&Ride services make only one or two stops on their journey in to York city centre, which is consistent with the vast majority of Park&Ride services across the UK."
“Whilst we fully understand and appreciate why inserting additional stops would, on the face of it benefit some residents, this could have the potential to undermine route 10 – and could result in further reducing the service levels for bus users not on the A59 (including those wishing to travel from Manor School and Poppleton village). Route 10 is a commercially operated service and First York has adjusted timetables / frequencies where it has identified that the demand warrants it.”
Transport campaigner Kevin Ward lives near the new route and says people are disappointed:
