French President Invites York MP to D-Day Celebrations
3:44pm 3rd June 2014
Hugh Bayley, Labour MP for York Central and President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, has been invited by the French President, Francois Hollande, to join the Presidential Platform at the official international celebration of the 70th Anniversary of D-Day on Friday 6 June 2014.
Hugh Bayley has spoken with Ken Smith, the Chairman of the York Branch of the Normandy Veterans Association, and has promised to meet the York Veterans on his return to tell them about his experiences. Seven Normandy Veterans from York will attend the commemoration events in Normandy on the day.
Hugh Bayley MP says:
“It is a great honour and privilege to be invited to join the French President’s platform at this important and historic ceremony. The courage and sacrifices made by Allied servicemen seventy years ago secured the freedom which people of my generation have enjoyed all our lives – and that includes the freedom to stand for office in democratic elections. It is something I never forget as an MP, and I want future generations to remember our debt to the second world war generation too.
“My father, who died only last year, fought in France, the Netherlands and Germany during the war before going on to serve in Egypt and Palestine. I shall remember him, and his comrades – both those who lost their lives and those who came back home to rebuild Britain after the war.”
