Kellingley Miners Could Buy Pit To Avoid Closure

Miners at Kellingley Colliery could buy the pit and run it themselves to avoid the risk of it closing down.
Unions are said to be considering the option after UK Coal announced last month it could shut the pit unless it gets an emergency cash injection of £20 million.
738 jobs would be put at risk if the pit closed, although the government has provided funds for an eighteen month managed closure of the pit.
Selby MP Nigel Adams has welcomed the idea and also told Minster FM the minister responsible, Michael Fallon, is also "encouraged" by the news.
The politician added that he understands the miners would have to find £60 million of financing to keep the pit going.
