Overnight Roadworks on York Outer Ring Road

11:24am 12th May 2014

York Council are currently carrying out highway improvement works overnight in the area surrounding the A59/A1237 junction in preparation for the opening of the new Poppleton Bar Park & Ride site. The works will take place until Friday 23 May 2014.

To allow the council to undertake these improvements overnight closures will be in place. The working hours will take place generally between 7.30pm until 6am, although some operations will be shorter than this.

The A59 York to Harrogate Road will operate east – west normally but access to the A1237 will not be available from the Wetherby Road junction (B1224) to the York Business Park roundabout (Great North Way).  Access to all businesses will be maintained from the A19 at Rawcliffe.

The work requires a closure of the A1237 to enable construction of an enlarged junction and surfacing works to be completed at Poppleton roundabout and along the A59.  All affected residents and traders have been sent notification about the works.

The road closure will be supervised at all times to prevent unauthorised access and access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

As with any construction work, there is likely to be a certain amount of disruption and inconvenience but everything reasonably possible will be done to keep this to a minimum. There will however be occasions, for example when surfacing, where we need to use rollers and pavers through the night.

The new Park & Ride site at Poppleton Bar is part of the Access York Project to improve access into York city centre and enhance York’s Park & Ride network, which already provides over four-million journeys every year.

The new service at Poppleton will provide a frequent 10-minute bus journeys in and out of the city centre.  The new site at Poppleton Bar will have capacity for 600 vehicles, including disabled and family parking spaces, cycling and camper van facilities.

Highway improvement works are also being undertaken to ease access into the new facility.  The A59/Station Road/Northfield Lane junction will be improved using traffic lights and a mini roundabout.

Alterations to the A59 /A1237 roundabout are also being made to ease congestion and include the installation of a new pedestrian and cyclist underpass.

Details of the scheme are available on the council’s website at http://www.york.gov.uk/parkandride

Both sites are expected to be in operation by June 2014.
