York's Labour party have defended their policy to create 20mph zones in the city. This follows criticism from opposition parties and claims in private emails obtained by Minster FM, written by York council's transport boss Dave Merritt, that coverage by the York Press has "undermined" the scheme.
A Labour spokesperson told us; "The Labour group has debated in a variety of forms about policy and the implementation of it. We were elected with a manifesto pledge to introduce 20mph speed limits and this is supported by Government policy. Some will agree with the policy and some will not, but it can be recognised that politicians should undertake their election pledges. The scheme is funded though Government funds and is cheaper than road safety measures carried out by the previous Liberal Democrat administration."
York's Conservative party and York's Liberal Democrats will be sharing their views on the scheme tomorrow.
