New Bus Service Between Market Weighton - Holme on Spalding Moor and York
11:19am 8th April 2014
Local bus company East Yorkshire Motor Services has announced a new bus service which will link Market Weighton, Holme on Spalding Moor and local villages with York Designer Outlet and York City Centre.
Starting from Monday 28 April, new Service 18 will run eight journeys in each direction Monday-Saturday, with extra late buses between York and Holme on Spalding Moor on Friday and Saturday nights.
As well as providing a service direct to York City Centre, the new bus also gives a link to the shopping mecca of York Designer Outlet, with bus passengers getting a limited time discount on their shopping at selected stores.
The new service came about after the previous contract for a service supported financially by local councils came to an end. Following a retendering exercise, increased contract prices meant that the three local authorities were unable to continue the service in its current form within their budget constraints. As EYMS had a spare bus available in the day between school journeys they decided to step in and provide a commercial service every two hours, to prevent the villages losing all their bus services. This left some peak and evening services uncovered, and City of York Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council provided EYMS with a small amount of financial support to include them in the final timetable.
EYMS Commercial Manager Bob Rackley hopes that the new service will be popular:
“Although council funding cuts and inadequate concessionary fares reimbursement are making life difficult for bus operators, we were glad to be able to step in at our own commercial risk to run the new service, and provide a new link to the Designer Outlet. We hope that people will enjoy using the new bus, and that it proves popular with people travelling into York.”
To find out about the new service and pick up a timetable people can drop in to see EYMS on Saturday 12 April at Holme on Spalding Moor Village Hall (10.00am-12.00 noon) or Market Weighton Tesco (12.30pm-3.00pm). Alternatively, the new timetable will be available from 14 April from the company’s website, www.eyms.co.uk
