Update on Kellingley Colliery Future "Within 48 Hours"
10:41am 8th April 2014
The future of Kellingley Colliery should become clearer within the next 48 hours.
Energy Minister Michael Fallon says UK Coal is looking for government cash to fund a "managed closure" of the pit.
He says he hopes to update MPs on the talks within 48 hours.
He's released a written statement to MPs this morning:
UK Coal is seeking investment, from various parties including the Government, to fund a managed run-down of its two remaining operational deep mines.
The future of UK Coal is primarily a commercial matter for the company. The Government is considering whether it can contribute to the private sector led proposals which aim to deliver a managed closure of the Thoresby and Kellingley deep mines.
I hope to be in a position to update the House on the outcome of these negotiations within the next 48 hours.
