Express Funds For Faster BroadBand in North Yorks
11:18am 9th March 2014
Funding for faster broadband in North Yorkshire has been released.
£7.6 million of government money has been given out earlier than expected so that company Super-Fast North Yorkshire can continue upgrading the system.
90 percent of the area has already received quicker broadband but York Outer MP Julian Sturdy wants to make sure everyone gets it. He said "We are seeing a digital divide where some communities can get broadband speeds of 25mgs, or over, and other communities are still down at 2mgs. And that is starting to make a real difference, particularly for people working at home and for students as well. The key thing though is that the funding has been released."
Mr Sturdy has said there as still some decisions to be taken as to exactly where the money is going to be spent and what technology is going to be used, particularly in the harder to reach areas. Phase one of the roll out is expected to be completed in Autumn this year ahead of schedule.
