Two Men Arrested on Suspicion of Murder at Carlton Travellers' Site
3:16pm 6th March 2014
Two men have been arrested at a travellers' site which has sprung up at Race Lane in Carlton near Selby.
The 30 and 37 year olds were detained at around 5pm yesterday by detectives investigating the murder of Sidney Cox in Leeds last year.
Sidney Cox was found dead at his home in Thorpe area of Leeds in August last year. He died in a suspected violent attack at his home.
The impromptu travellers' site on Race Lane is now at the centre of a legal row.
Selby Council has obtained a court injunction which stops any further travellers setting up camp on the land but the existing travellers could remain on the land if a planning application is put in for them to stay. However, Selby Council has told Minster FM it is seeking to take enforcement action to a site which does not have planning permission. If no planning application is submitted it's estimated it could take three to four weeks to remove the travellers.
Leader of the Council Mark Crane said:
"We have taken action immediately and we are sending officers down there everyday to make sure that no more caravans or equipment arrive on that site. The other thing I can say, is that we are taking enforcement action and will do that as quickly as possible because people that live in Selby district obey the law, obey the planning law and I have an expectation that every part of the community should do that."
