York's 30th Jorvik Viking Festival To Have Apocalyptic Finish
9:51am 22nd February 2014
This year’s 30th Jorvik Viking Festival draws to a close today after a full week of events themed around the prediction of Ragnarok which is the event described in Viking mythology as the end of the world.
The conclusion of the festival takes place this evening when the Vikings make their final preparations for the oncoming catastrophe.
Around 300 Viking warriors will gather in Dean’s Park, adjacent to York Minster for a march through the city streets in a fantastic show of strength from 1:30pm.
The Norse warriors will then make their way to Clifford’s Tower as the sun sets at 6:45pm to take part in the apocalyptic Battle Spectacular Finale, which features thrilling live battle action, sound and light effects, as well as pyrotechnics.
Festival Director, Danielle Daglan said: “The eyes of the world will be on York tonight as our countdown to Ragnarok comes to an end, and if the prediction does come true, we are determined to go out with a bang.
“The legend of Ragnarok tells of the fall of the Norse Gods and the birth of a new world, but if we wake up to the same old world on the morning of Sunday 23rd February, we’ll have no regrets – our celebrations also marks Jolabolt, the Viking feast to hail the coming spring, which many people see as the annual rebirth of the world.”
Some tickets are still available for the Ragnarok Finale, priced at £12.00 for adults, £9.50 for concessions or £36.00 for a family of four.
