Monday Evening Football for Teenagers Returns to Sherburn in Elmet

10:09am 20th February 2014

Young people in Sherburn will soon be able to “pitch up and play” with the return of the popular Monday evening football sessions.

Organised by leisure and culture provider WLCT, in partnership with Selby District Council, York City Football in the Community and Selby Youth Support, the sessions will be run at Sherburn White Rose all weather pitch, every Monday from 24 February 2014.

Sessions take place between 5.30pm and 6.30pm, cost £1 per player and are open to anyone over the age of 11-years-old. All proceeds are reinvested into the project.

Players don’t have to book – they just turn up and play. The sessions are run by qualified York City Community Coaches who provide fun based skills practices and manage the football matches to ensure fair play and maximum enjoyment.

Similar schemes are already running in Selby and Tadcaster.

Heather Kennedy, WLCT’s Sports Development Officer, said: “We ran a really successful pilot programme last year and have already restarted the sessions in Selby and Tadcaster.

“The young people that come to the sessions really get involved and prove, whatever the weather, they are willing to turn up and have a game.

“We know this is a much needed activity in the district so we have worked with partners to bring back the sessions as soon as we could in the new year.”

Cllr Gillian Ivey, Deputy Leader for Selby District Council, said: “The sessions provide young people with the opportunity to have a kick about with their friends in a supervised and safe environment. These session were really well received the first time round and we hope even more young people take part this year.”
