York Students to Take Part in Heslington Road Clean Up
8:33am 19th February 2014
York Council and the York University Students Union will once again join forces next week to give the Heslington Road area a spring clean.
Following on from last years spring clean student volunteers will look to refresh and tidy up the gardens along Heslington Road on February 19 from 12-4pm.
Cllr David Levene, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: “It is always great to see students taking pride in the area where they are living and studying. This is also a really good way for the council to highlight the volunteering opportunities available to other individuals and groups who wish to get involved in their local area.”
Kallum Taylor, York University Students Union President, said: “This week’s Ground Force event is another great example of the benefits which student volunteers can bring to their new communities. Mucking in – literally in this case – and getting your hands dirty can be good fun and if it helps improve Heslington Road’s appearance, whilst also getting people to talk, then that's great. There’s much more to gain from things like this than just a nice flower arrangement.”
Smarter York aims to help maintain a clean, green and safe environment for York. The initiative encourages and works with residents to create attractive neighbourhoods with a real sense of community and to tackle the things that can spoil our neighbourhoods for example littering or graffiti.
