Update on Sherburn in Elmet Tyre Fire
10:47am 1st February 2014
Clean up teams will be at the site of the tyre fire near Sherburn in Elmet over the weekend as part of continuing efforts to bring an end to the long-running fire as quickly and safely as possible.
The fire is being left to burn out, but as part of the overall strategy of bringing the fire to an end small amounts of material are being removed and extinguised when its safe to do so.
This means there could be some additional smoke over the coming days as some of the material is moved; this should be very localised.
Dave Pitt from the Fire and Rescue Service explained to Minster FM: "If we didn't do this there is a danger that the fire could continue to smoulder for a very long time."
Advice for anyone coming into contact with the smoke remains low risk, although motorists driving through the smoke should close windows and turn off the air conditioning.
If anyone is concerned about the affects of the smoke on their health contact your Local GP or by calling NHS 111.
