A woman from Tang Hall has been punished after being shopped on York's benefit fraud hotline.
30 year old Barbara Brown partner was working and living with her for a year, while she claimed more than £5,000 extra in benefits, made up of £2860.11 in Housing Benefit and £2,525.57 in Income Support. She admitted all charged against her to York magistrates and was given a 12 month conditional discharge and had to pay £100 in court costs.
She was reported by someone who phoned the city's anti-fraud hotline.
The city council stress anyone with suspicions, even if they're not sure, should call them to let them know and that all calls will be treated in confidence and your details won't be given to the person you're phoning up about.
Dafydd Williams, Cabinet Member for Finance, Performance and Customer Service said: “This is another example of a good result in the fight against fraud. Along with the support of the public, the council will continue to tackle this type of criminal behaviour, and action will be taken against those who are abusing the system. We’d like to thank the member of the public who brought this to our attention and encourage anyone with knowledge of fraudulent activity to phone the confidential fraud hotline on 01904 552935 or email email@example.com.”
