Thirsk and Malton MP Welcomes Start of Pickering Flood Scheme

Thirsk and Malton MP Anne McIntosh has welcomed the start of flood prevention work in Pickering on Tuesday.

Work to start the construction of a new reservoir and part of the Pickering Pilot Project will begin after a turf cutting ceremony on Tuesday 7 January.

Anne McIntosh said “The Slow the Flow project is a pioneering flood prevention scheme which will bring immediate benefit to those living in Pickering but also similar schemes could be rolled out elsewhere in the country.”

“The start of the construction of the reservoir as part of the Slow the Flow  project is excellent news for Pickering and taken together with the other land management measures should protect the town from all but the most extreme floods in future.”

"I would like to congratulate all those involved in what has been genuine partnership approach: Ryedale District Council, North Yorkshire County Council, the Yorkshire Flood and Coastal Committee, Pickering Town Council, the Environment Agency and North York Moors Railway who have played their various roles in securing the funding, agreeing the location and design and performing future maintenance.”

“Taken with the other flood alleviation measures such as planting trees by the Forestry Commission, woody debris dams, timber bunds and other means to block the water running off the moors, such ways of working closely with nature will allow the Pickering Pilot Project to be a flagship scheme for other parts of the country.”

“Part funded by Defra , this is a scheme in which the Government has a close interest and is part of its wider flood prevention programme but I am pleased that Pickering locally will benefit substantially having suffered such frequent recent floods.”
