North Yorkshire Rail Users Urged To Plan Ahead For Festive Season Journeys

East Coast is urging customers to plan ahead for Christmas and New Year travel, as the train operator prepares for the traditionally busy festive getaway.

They add that the message is especially important for those travelling between Christmas and New Year, as services on Friday 27 December will be significantly affected by essential engineering work at Peterborough station.

East Coast will be operating a revised timetable between Monday 23 December 2013 and Thursday 2 January 2014 inclusive. As in previous years, trains will not operate on Christmas Day or Boxing Day – and timetable changes will also be in place to cater for additional demand at busy times, and to allow for the engineering works.

Network Rail will complete the installation of new platforms, track and signalling at Peterborough station over three days, between Wednesday 25 and Friday 27 December 2013.

While the engineering works are being completed on Friday 27 December, the East Coast Main Line will be closed between Grantham, Peterborough and Huntingdon. A rail replacement coach service will be provided between these stations and journey times will be significantly extended. East Coast rail services will continue between the North and Grantham, and between Huntingdon and London King’s Cross.

East Coast is advising passengers to plan ahead and defer travel to an alternative day if possible. Additional services will be operating on Saturday 28 December to help cater for additional demand and provide extra travel opportunities.

East Coast Managing Director Karen Boswell said: “Our trains will be very busy during the run-up to Christmas and after the New Year celebrations, as people across the route travel home or on holiday by train.

“We advise our customers to make reservations for travel on services during these peak holiday periods, to ensure a comfortable journey.”

To help customers over the festive period, East Coast is relaxing various ticket restrictions. On Monday 23 December, time restrictions on the use of Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets on northbound services from London King’s Cross and Stevenage stations will be lifted.

In addition, between Tuesday 24 December and Wednesday 1 January inclusive, all time restrictions on the use of Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak and Off-Peak Day tickets will be lifted on East Coast services.

East Coast services on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve will finish earlier than usual. The last East Coast services to and from London King’s Cross are as follows:
