Crisis Meeting As Eggborough Power Station At Risk of Closure
2:47pm 19th December 2013
A crisis meeting is taking place between Selby MP Nigel Adams, Eggborough Power Station bosses and the government as the plant is threatened with closure.
The government announced earlier that Eggborough had missed out on funding to convert the coal fired power station to biomass. The project, which was due to start on 6th January, has now been suspended which Eggborough says puts millions of pounds of investment at risk.
The first parts of the power station could close in September, which a unit which supplies 1% of the UK's electricity being shut down. The whole of Eggborough Power Station could stop producing electricity by 2015.
Chief Executive of Eggborough Power Station Neil O’Hara said today:
“Unless a viable solution is found with Government, the most likely outcome now is that Eggborough will no longer be supplying electricity to the grid beyond 2015. Impending EU regulation and the escalating impact of the carbon price floor mean this is unfortunately the rational economic conclusion based on the information we have available at this time.”
