Selby Pupils Win Awards for Drax Artwork
5:24pm 10th December 2013
More than 70 artworks by pupils from Selby and Goole schools were on show in a temporary gallery at Drax Sports and Social Club recently.
The artists aged 5-18 celebrated their achievements on the day with 12 awards in the Drax Art in the Community competition, which is now in its seventh year. Prizes of art supplies totalling more than £2,800 were presented by Drax head of corporate affairs, Philip Hudson, at a ceremony attended by teachers.
Philip Hudson said: “From the reaction of the children and teachers it was clear the day was full of enjoyment for everyone. We believe Art in the Community encourages young people to express themselves through art and we’re delighted to support the work of teachers in developing this feeling among their pupils”
On the panel of judges from Drax were Damien Speight, head trader and Lisa Bower, head of procurement.
The work of the 12 finalists will go on a tour of venues in the area in the early part of 2014.
Art InThe Community is an initiative within Drax’s community relations programme that is designed to encourage and develop art appreciation as part of the company’s support for education and to promote art learning within the National Curriculum.
