Food businesses in Easingwold and across Hambleton are being urged to use a new toolkit to bring in more customers – and press home the importance of good hygiene standards.

The Food Standards Agency has devised the on line resource to help businesses in the Food Hygiene Ratings Scheme to promote their success.

Hambleton District Council currently has 667 businesses registered on the ratings scheme – 488 of them with a top 5 rating.

The scheme rates businesses from 0 to 5, with 5 awarded to the best and 0 for the worst.   It covers restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways and hotels as well as supermarkets and food shops.

The score is given following inspection by a council food safety officer – and is the rating at the time of the inspection.    One of six scores can be given - 0 means urgent improvement is necessary, while 5 means the business was found to have very good hygiene standards.   It aims to reduce foodborne illnesses and ensure consistency for businesses and clarity for consumers across the country.

“All premises are inspected by environmental health officers on a regular basis – restaurants, takeaways, cafes, sandwich shops, pubs, hotels, supermarkets,” said Lead Environmental Health Officer, Maria Bentley

“Good hygiene is good for business – and any improvements needed to get a higher rating will be no more than is already required by law.  We are encouraging our businesses to tell their customers their rating – it will bring in more customers, both in person and on line.  They need to capitalise on their rating and help promote the importance of good food hygiene.”

The ranking is displayed on window stickers and certificates – as well as being listed on food.gov.uk/ratings and hambleton.gov.uk.   A smartphone app is available on food.gov.uk/multimedia/webpage/moreabouten
