MP Calls for Army Unit to Stay in York
2:28pm 29th October 2013
York Central MP Hugh Bayley's written to the Defence Minister Andrew Robathan MP calling for a new Army command merged Headquarters 15 (North East) Brigade and Headquarters 4th (Mechanised) Brigade to be based at York rather than at Catterick Garrison.
The MP argues it would be cheaper and more efficient to base Headquarters 15 Brigade in York and opposes the transfer to Catterick. He argues there's enough space to base both Headquarters 15 Brigade and the Headquarters 1st Division, which is moving from Germany to York, on the same site.
Hugh Bayley criticises the proposed Catterick accommodation saying it's over a number of separate buildings and has insufficient communication systems would have to be installed at Catterick. The Adaptable Force Brigade Headquarters will command Army units spread across the whole of the north of England and the MP argues York has much better road and rail communications with other parts of the world than Catterick.
Hugh Bayley MP says:
“I welcome the decision to base a two star General and the Headquarters 1st Division in York. However, it would be a waste of public money to spend millions of pounds building new accommodation for the merged Adaptable Force Brigade Headquarters at Catterick when there is already suitable accommodation in York to house both the Brigade and the 1st Division Headquarters.
“I hope the Government will meet me to discuss the cost savings and efficiency gains which they would make if they keep the Brigade Headquarters in York.”
