On Street Parking Charges To Be Examined for Easingwold, Selby and Malton
1:49pm 29th October 2013
Shoppers in Easingwold, Malton and Selby could face having to pay to park on their high streets.
This morning , North Yorkshire County Council passed the plans for Northallerton, which will be the first town to see on street parking charges.
The first half an hour of parking will be free but then motorists would pay 80p for an hour or £1.60 for two hours street parking.
The county council believes 45% of drivers wouldn't have to pay and that it could free up more parking by encouraging more people into town centres for shorter shopping trips.
Proposals will now be put together for other towns in Hambleton district, including Easingwold, before plans are then being rolled out to Selby and Ryedale later on. Views will be taken for local people to give their opinions on high street parking charges.
A recent court case means the county council cannot use the new parking charges to deliberately raise money but only to help deal with traffic issues.
