York Student Community Action Day

Minster FM News Generic

6:01am 19th October 2013

Staying safe, free security marking and getting involved in the local community will be the focus of a community action day for students in York today (19 October 2013).

North Yorkshire Police, the City of York Council Ward Councillors, representatives from the local residents association, IG Properties (student housing) and York University Student Union are hosting the event from 10am at Hull Road Cooperative store and Hull Road Park.

The mobile police office will be parked outside the Coop store where students will be offered free cycle security marking, crime prevention advice and personal safety advice.

Officers will also be promoting North Yorkshire Police’s free student app – NYP@Uni - which contains everything students need to know about how to keep themselves and their stuff safe.

Police and representatives from the City of York Council will be carrying out proactive patrols to check on insecure student properties and highlight any security issues as well as giving advice about looking after their student accommodation.

A community engagement event with free refreshments will also be held at Hull Road Park Pavilion between 12pm and 2pm where students can meet their local residents association, ward councillors and Smarter York representatives.

Acting Sergeant Neil Slater of York Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Security is often low down on the list of priorities for new students who are looking to enjoy the lifestyle which are lovely city can offer.

“While they have made an excellent choice and have come to one of the safest areas of the country, crime still happens and it’s important that they take some basic measures to look after themselves and their stuff.

“One of the biggest problems we have is students leaving doors and windows open, giving sneak-in thieves an opportunity to take their very desirable gadgets such as iPads, smartphones and laptops. We’ll be handing out advice as well as checking on insecure doors and windows in the area.”

A/Sgt Slater added: “City of York Councillors will also be on hand to offer advice along with members of the local residents association to help build up good relationships with the students.

New and existing students will also be able to find out more about the community allotment scheme.

Events will be taking place at separate sites:

  • Hull Road Co-operative store from 10am
  • Hull Road Park pavilion between 12noon – 2.00pm

Where you can meet:

  • Your local policing team
  • Ward Councillors Fiona Fitzpatrick and Neil Barnes
  • Smarter York Officers
  • Housing representatives
