York Man Jailed for Stabbing Elderly Dad with Knife

Craig Gill 081013

1:17pm 8th October 2013

A York man has today  been handed a ten year jail term for stabbing his father.

57-year-old Craig Hamilton Gill of Chantry Avenue, Upper Poppleton was sentenced at York Crown Court after pleading guilty yesterday to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

At around 9pm on the night of Friday 6 April 2013, Gill attacked his 81-year-old father (now 82) at the family home in Upper Poppleton. He caused a stab wound to his chest which lacerated his lung and other internal organs. He also suffered a head injury in the attack.

Gill was originally charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to the offence of wounding with intent.

In addition, he was also charged with common assault after he assaulted a police officer while in police custody to which he pleaded guilty earlier this year.

Investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Mandy Grundy of York CID, said: “I am satisfied with the sentence handed down to Craig Gill which reflects the gravity of the offence committed.

“This was a difficult case for everyone concerned and involved close members of the same family – both victim and offender. The assault upon an elderly man by his own son involving the use of a knife could only have resulted in serious injury or harm to the victim.

“Mr Eldon Gill and other members of the family are relieved that Craig Gill pleaded guilty and spared them the ordeal of having to attend a Crown Court trial. I hope the sentence at least gives some closure to what has been a very difficult time for the family.”
