Woman Left With Broken Jaw After Trying to Break Up York Row

York police have issued CCTV images to assist their appeal for information after a woman’s jaw was broken when she tried to break up an altercation in the street.
The assault happened at around 4am on Saturday 17 August 2013 on the corner of Piccadilly and Coppergate when a man was shouting verbal abuse at two women.
The victim of the assault, a 21-year-old York woman intervened and was struck in the face by the suspect before falling to the ground.
She was treated at York District Hospital and was found to have a fractured jaw and cheekbone.
Police have released an image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the assault and are appealing for him or anyone who can help identify him, to get in touch. He is described as around 25 years old, approximately 6ft tall with brown afro hair.
They would also like to hear from any witnesses to the incident.
Investigating officer, PC Gareth Vaughan of York Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “This was a cowardly assault on a woman who was acting as a peacemaker and as a result of her public-spirited actions, suffered serious facial injuries.
“It’s vital that anyone who can assist our investigation gets in touch without delay.”
