York Race For Life Runners Urged To Get Sponsorship Money In
8:54am 13th August 2013
Organisers of this year's York Race For Life are urging runners to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible to fund vital research into 200 types of cancer.
Thousands of women in York made a defiant stand against cancer by taking part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at York Racecourse earlier this summer.
The formidable army of mums, daughters, sisters, grans, aunts and friends kitted out in every shade of pink imaginable assembled on the start line to confront cancer.
Now organisers are saying a heart-felt ‘thanks’ to everyone who took part - and urging them to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible to fund vital research into 200 types of cancer.
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is an inspiring women-only series of events which raises millions of pounds every year to help defeat cancer by funding life-saving research.
Jenny Murgatroyd, Race for Life event manager for Yorkshire said: “We are so very grateful to all our participants, supporters and wonderful volunteers who helped make Race for Life such an amazing event.
“Now the big day is over, we are asking everyone to take one last step – by returning the money they’ve raised so it can go into vital research to help more men, women and children survive cancer.
"But research is expensive so Cancer Research UK needs the people of York to help raise £240,000 from their Race for Life event to support it.
“Many people don’t realise that their entry fee only covers the cost of staging the event. It’s the sponsorship money that really makes a difference.
“Cancer Research UK doesn’t receive any Government funding for its ground-breaking work. The money local people raise through Race for Life is crucial because it means we can go on supporting the pioneering work of doctors, nurses and scientists who are fighting cancer on all fronts. With help from the people of York, we intend to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
"Despite improvements in treatment, significant challenges lie ahead. With the number of cancer cases in the UK set to rise steeply by 2030, Cancer Research UK wants nothing to slow down the progress it’s making.
“So, whatever the amount, we’re asking everyone to make every effort to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible. It can be paid in online, by phone or by cheque.”
