Princess Beatrice To Be Patron of York's Theatre Royal
2:04pm 5th August 2013
York Theatre Royal is pleased to announce that Princess Beatrice has agreed to become their Patron. The Princess paid a special visit to the costume workshops last summer during preparations for The York Mystery Plays – a co-production by York Theatre Royal, York Museums Trust and Riding Lights Theatre Company of a medieval cycle of plays which has been told by the people of York for hundreds of years and is deeply embedded in the City's cultural heritage. HRH Princess Beatrice was keen to learn more about the plays after hearing about them at the Yorkshire Museum as part of Her Majesty the Queen’s visit.
Last year’s massive outdoor production of The York Mystery Plays in York’s Museum Gardens involved hundreds of volunteers working across all aspects of putting on the plays and included 60 costume volunteers making over 3,000 individual items inspired by the 40s and 50s. The Princess’ visit culminated with Her Royal Highness turning her hand to Pattern Cutting, as she cut the first piece of fabric for an Angel costume under the supervision of Community Wardrobe Supervisor Janet Hull.
York Theatre Royal Chief Executive Liz Wilson said “We are delighted and looking forward to welcoming her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice to the Theatre Royal on her next visit to York to personally thank her for her support”.
