It's been 12 months since there have been any domestic fire related deaths recorded in the Humberside area. This is the first time a year has passed without a fire death since 1976.

Over recent years, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service has worked hard to drive down fire related deaths in the community.

Daryl Oprey, Head of Safety at Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “This is a commendable achievement and there are a number of factors that have contributed. The community safety work our staff have delivered has seen fire related incidents reduce year on year. But we also need to acknowledge the role members of our communities have played in this reduction, people are much more fire aware now. Nearly all homes have smoke alarms fitted and people are much more aware of the fire hazards in the home.”

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service has also developed safety initiatives with partner agencies to help reduce fire related incidents within the community.

“We formed a multi-agency partnership to fit sprinklers systems in the homes of those most vulnerable from fire. This initiative has saved at least three lives and demonstrates how safety  partnerships can really have an impact on people’s lives. It’s important to work closely with partner agencies to continue to deliver joint initiatives such as these to help keep our communities safe,” Mr Oprey added.
