10:45am 20th July 2013
Twenty three gardens were entered for the competition and six lucky winners have scooped more than £200 in prize money.
The judging took place on Monday 15 July and the judges were led by Nigel Harrison, well known horticulturalist, lecturer at Askham Bryan College and Radio York broadcaster.
The first prize of £100, sponsored by Foxwood Residents Association, went to Sylvia Fishwick of Otterwood Lane whose garden, judges said, "was worthy of an entry at Tatton".
Second prize of Barnitts vouchers to the value of £50 went to Vera Simpson of Tedder Road who has created "a peaceful oasis" .
A prize of £25, sponsored by Accent Foundation Ltd, was won by Mrs Bates of Pheasant Drive whose unusual and interesting garden made the most of using items which would otherwise be discarded.
Prizes for containers, sponsored by Deans Garden Centre, Joseph Rowntree Housing Association and Accent Foundation Ltd went to Sarah Stables of Foxwood Lane, and Dorothy Higgins of Stirrup Close.
A discretionary judges' prize was awarded to Jess Souttar of Linnet Way.
Shirley Gumley, Chairman of the Residents Association, said
" This was the first time we had organised anything like this and we were pleasantly surprised by the number of entries. The judges are looking forward to the competition in 2014 and hope to see many more residents taking part."
