A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “Following a media appeal for information issued by British Transport Police (BTP) yesterday, a 49 -year-old woman from Long Benton in Newcastle has handed herself into police.

“BTP appealed to the public on Tuesday, 9 July, to help identify a woman who had assaulted a passenger onboard a train at York railway station on Saturday, 29 June.

“The woman will now be interviewed in due course and dealt with accordingly.

“We would like to thank the media for their assistance in publishing this appeal, which led to the woman handing herself in.”
