Volunteers Head To York Today
7:22am 25th June 2013
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, today welcomes representatives from a variety of charities and community organisations to Bishopthorpe Palace to say thank you for the contribution they make to local and national life.
The Archbishop is speaking at an event marking the efforts of all the groups of which he is a Patron. Over 35 charities and organisations were represented at the celebration.
The Archbishop’s role as Patron reflects the wide range of interests he has in areas such as education, justice, democracy, law and order, health and well-being, and sport.
The Archbishop of York said: “I always try to visit as many of these organisations every year to see the work they are doing to improve life locally and nationally. However, sadly I can’t always do this given the demands I face. So I thought let’s get all these organisations and charities to come to Bishopthorpe so I can say thank you properly!
“We should not forget that behind many of our wonderful organisations there are often volunteers working behind the scenes who do not get the recognition they deserve. I take my hat off to these people – you are fantastic! Keep going for God and serving others in all you do!
“I hope that today won’t just be an opportunity for us to pat each other on the back, but also for these organisations to get to know each other better, to talk about the challenges ahead and the achievements so far, and inspire each other in how we tackle the problems we face together.
“The Church has been doing the Big Society for over 2000 years – when we put the needs of others first, we can all flourish.”
