University of York Goes Up University League Table

University of York

3:22pm 20th June 2013

The University of York is the only UK University to rank in the top 10 in the Times Higher Education (THE) world rankings of universities less than 50 years old.

Eight nations are represented in the top 10 of THE 100 under 50 rankings for 2013, with York rising one place to seventh, reaffirming its international reputation for excellence in research, teaching, knowledge transfer and global outlook.

The University of York, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has managed to forge a powerful global reputation as a strong research-led university, performing well against the world’s elite heritage institutions. It also recently joined the prestigious Russell Group of leading UK universities.

THE 100 under 50 rankings, which were introduced last year, rely on the world’s largest academic reputation survey – involving 17,500 academics – and an analysis of 50 million citations. They use 13 separate performance indicators, covering all core missions of a modern global university – research, teaching, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

York’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian Cantor, said: "We are delighted that Times Higher Education 100 under 50 league table has recognised, for the second year running, our world-leading strengths in teaching, research and knowledge transfer activities.

“In our 50th anniversary year, this is a wonderful reflection of the University’s world-wide impact. Our success stems from the tremendous hard work, dedication and ability of all our staff and students over many years.”

Phil Baty, the Editor of the Times Higher Education Rankings, said:  “The Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 rankings highlight those institutions like York that have joined the ranks of the world’s finest in a matter of years, while many of their competitors have had centuries of development, or those that are showing great potential for future success.

“The Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 rankings highlight some exceptional achievements from fast-developing and exceptionally well-funded institutions in East Asia, notably in South Korea and Singapore. So for York to have held on to a prestigious top ten position in the world, against such competition, and to remain number one in the UK, is a great achievement.”
