Police Renew Appeal for Information After York Sex Assault
3:11pm 20th June 2013
One week on from a serious sexual assault on a woman in York, a team of police officers have returned to the scene of the incident to appeal for witnesses and information.
The victim, who is aged in her 20s, was walking along Garden Street in The Groves area at about 5pm last Thursday when she was attacked by an unknown man in a small residential car park – just opposite the large St John’s public car park.
She is receiving specialist support from police and partner agencies.
Police enquires have been ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to locate the man.
Officers re-attended the scene between 4pm and 8pm on Thursday 20 June 2013 to speak to people who may have been in the same place a week ago when the incident occurred.
Leaflets have also been distributed to houses in the neighbourhood and to students at the nearby York St John University to help the appeal.
Detective Inspector Andrea Kell, of York CID said: “We are urging local residents and people who work or are students in the area to come forward with any information that could help the investigation.
“As well as potential witnesses to the incident itself, we need to know about any suspicious or unusual behaviour.
“Someone will have seen the man responsible as this a busy area and I urge people to cast their minds back to that afternoon if you were in The Groves.
“You may have seen the man as he left the area of the attack, so please don't just focus on Garden Street.
“Also, I would like to appeal to potential partners or friends of the man described. Someone will recognise who this is and we ask them to name him. This can be done anonymously if they wish, but please do the right thing and make that call.”
DI Kell added: “We are also appealing to home and businesses owners in the area who have private CCTV cameras that cover the street. If so, please check if you still have footage recorded on the afternoon or evening of last Thursday, the 13th of June.
“No matter how small or seemingly insignificant the information or footage appears to be, it could be very important to the investigation. “
The suspect is described as white, aged in his late 30s to early 40s, with mid-brown hair which is parted in the middle in a ‘curtain style’. He has an unkempt, scraggly beard with pockmarked skin above the beard.
He was wearing a waist-length, dark-green jacket which may have a pocket on the front.
The victim said the man smelt strongly of alcohol.
